The consul Lucio Emilio Paolo (? - August 2; 216 BC) led the army of the Roman Republic along with Gaius Terenzio Varrone console; in a strictly tight formation; Hannibal; although numerically disadvantaged; encircled them with a pincer movement; inflicting one of the most disastrous defeats of the Second Punic War.
