John Thomas Seton.Lieutenant-General Sir Eyre Coote; (1726-83); served in India 1754-62; 1769-70; 1777-83; in campaigns against the French and later Haidar 鈥楢li. Commander-in-Chief in the East Indies; 1777-83.A full-length figure; wearing a military coat of red faced with blue; light-coloured waistcoat and breeches; and high military boots with spurs. He wears the star and ribbon of the Bath; and at his side hangs a gold-hilted sword; possibly the one presented to him by the Company in 1764. His left hand; which rests upon a tasselled cane; holds an unfolded despatch; the right is lightly laid upon his hat which is placed upon a table covered with a dark green cloth. On this are piled or spread out several documents. Two curtains are parted to show a stretch of open country in the background.
