William Verelst.John Dean (? - 1747); shipwrecked mariner; 1741-43A three-quarter length figure of a young man; turned half to the left. The dress consists of a coarse grey coat over a blue sleeved waistcoat; a red silk neck-cloth and corduroy breeches. In his extended right hand is a letter apparently addressed 鈥楾o the Capt of (.) or any other to whose hands there may come these'; his left holds a walking stick; while his beaver is tucked under his left arm.Inscribed on a panel below: 鈥楯ohn Dean; The Only Survivor of the Sixteen Men which remained on board the Ship Sussex in the Honble East India Company's Service'; Oil painting. 58 by 28 ins (147.5 by 71 cms).Commissioned by the East India Company; c. 1741.Foster 19London; British Library.
