Taormina; the "Naumachia". The 18 arches and 18 niches create a structure whose original purpose is unknown. It has been suggested that it was Nymphaeum (temple dedicated to water nymphs) or a "Naumachia" (a water-filled area for small-scale theatrical naval battles). The suggestion of Naumachia has been supported by the discovery of a huge cistern situated behind the 122 metre long structure. Country of Origin: Italy. Culture: Roman. Date/Period: 2nd AD. Place of Origin: Sicily. Credit Line: Werner Forman Archive/ N. J Saunders
