James Gillray.Impeachment Ticket for the Trial of W-rr-n H-st-ngs Esqr; Gillray bases his satirical ticket on Sayers' composition (see P3324). Gillray often appropriated Sayers' work for different political ends; even; as here; to the extent of including Sayers' monogram (bottom left). The most significant difference between the two versions is the supporters on either side of the shield. Here in Gillray's version; an angry Lord Chancellor Thurlow sits on a commode; while on the other side of the shield a terrified Indian pleads for justice. In the court scene below; Hastings kneels dramatically in front of Thurlow. To his right; his supporters decry a politically motivated trial; while prosecutors on the left demand redress for Hastings' corruption.Published: 1788.1788.P3335London; British Library.
