Fine Begum Hastings a Lack a Peck; The Lord Chancellor; Edward Thurlow; pulls a horse-drawn cart bearing Warren Hastings and Edmund Burke; each asserting their moral ascendancy and holding peapods in the air. The depiction of peapods is a pun both on Hastings' name; which was also a popular type of green pea; and the Indian currency; the rupee; implying that his impeachment was due to financial impropriety. Thurlow's exclamation may also be a pun on 鈥榣ack' and 鈥榣akh'; the Indian term for a hundred thousand.Published: 1787 - 1788.1787-1788.P3322London; British Library.
