Metropole Hotel first opened in 1934 - the heday of Shanghai's International Settlement period. Located on Fuzhou Lu (Road). Interesting feature is its baroque semi-round tower. Art Deco style popular in Shanghai at that time - influence of Manhattan on Shanghai's mini skyscrapers. Designed by Palmer and Turner and developed by Victor Sassoon as sister to the Cathay (Peace) Hotel. Famed for its American Bar - meeting place for journalists; businessmen and diplomats.
