Yu Garden or Yuyuan Gardens - 'Garden of Happiness' - an extensive garden located next to City God Temple in Shanghai. First built in 1559 during Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan for his elderly father; the minister Pan En. Construction postponed until 1577. Largest and most prestigious in Shanghai. Considerable damage during 19th century. Occupies 2 hectares and divided into 6 general areas laid out in Suzhou style.
