Ulrich von HUTTEN (1488 - 1523) humanist and German knight; theology scholar; promoter of the Protestant Reformation; which he believed should be defended and propagated even with weapons. He imagined a righteous empire from the gentry; to which he belonged; and coalesced against the Papacy. He died poor and sick; exiled on the island of Ufenau; his last days are described in the poem by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer (1825-1898) "Huttens letzte Tage".
