THE CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS (Musei Capitolini) IN ROME; ITALY. The creation of the Capitoline Museums has been traced back to 1471; when Pope Sixtus IV donated a group of bronze statues of great symbolic value to the People of Rome. The collections are closely linked to the city of Rome; and most of the exhibits come from the city itself.SARCOPHAGUS WITH THE CALYDONIAN BOAR HUNT (detail). At the center of the scene Meleager hunts the Calydonian boar before Artemis; the goddess of hunting.The work dates to the first half of the 3rd century AD (201-250 AD).It was found in Via Valeria; in the section that goes from Tivoli to Vicovaro.
