Main the literary source of this cycle of frescoes is the Gold Legend of Jacobus de Voragine which resumes the Apocryphal gospels; in particular the Protovangelo di Giacomo; the Apocryphal gospel of the Pseudo Matteo and that of the Nativity of the Vergine.
