The Vuk & Dositej Museum was establiosehd in 1949 inn one of the eight oldest town houses of Belgrade. it was built in 1739 as the residence of the Belgrade Defterdar (head of the Ottoman provincial treasury). It as well might have been a harem. The msueum shwos special exhibitions and is dedicated to Vuk Stefanovic Karad啪ic (1787 - 1864); the main reformer of the Serbian language; and Dositej Obradovic (1742 - 1811); a writer who was the country's first Minister of Education. The museum is a crucial site for understanding the revival of Serbian culture at the time of the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire. Here; the first higher school (lyceum) of Serbia was established. Both are central figures of the age of enlightment nad key figures for the development and revival of Serbian culture; literature and politics. Since 1979; the museum is part of the national Museum of Serbia. In 2010 and 2011; the museum was restored. In fornt of the msueum; a cross walk with a design of a zebra was painted; so; a real zebra crossing.
