Prince Mihailo Obrenovic ruled Serbia 1839 - 1842 and 1860 to 1868. He was assasinated in 1868. During his reign; Turks moved out of the last six fortresses in Serbia. The names of these fortresses are shown on the monument. On the front side; there is the coat of arms of Serbia used during the reign of Mihailo Obrenovic. The monument with equestrial statue was realized by Italian and Florentine scultor Enrico Pazzi and unveiled; in 1882. The National Museum building behind the monument was constructed by architects Stevanovic and Nestorovic; in 1903. Originally; it was used as the National Bank. The National Museum; founded in 1844; moved in here after World War II; only. It was renovated; recently; as well; the monument; and the square.
