Gardo拧 Hill may be translated as castle hill or fortress hill. In fact; the tower was built in the center of the medieval fortress and castle (14th century); where in earlier times even Celtic and Roman Taurunum was. Number of inhabitants today is around 160 000. The area of Zemun is inhabited since neolithic times. There was a Celtic (3rd century BC) and Roman (1st century BC) settlement here; called Taurunum. Frankish conquerors called it Mallevila; in 9th century AD; Slavic people called it later on Zemln; referring to the word zemlja for earth. Later on; the German version became Semlin; the Hungarian Zimony; and the Serbian Zemun. In 1717; Habsburg Empire conquered the area near the confluence of Danube and Sava; Semlin became a Habsburg border town to the Ottoman Empire; while Belgrade remained Ottoman.
