The building of the monumental church; the second biggest Orthodox Church worldwide; began in 1935; when the smaller church next to this building was finished. Before; at this place there was a wooden church; built in 1894 to commemorate the burning of the relics of the most popular Serbian Saint; St Sava; which dated back to 1594 and Ottoman ruler Sinan-Pasha. The burning of the relics was a punishment caused by the Serbian rebellion in the Banat area; in those years. Building of the church; which is populary called also "the temple" (hram); was 1935 to 1939 and 1985 to 1989; when the structure was finished and a huge; 12 m high golden cross was erected on top of the church. In 2003; the church facades were finally covered with white marble; in 2004 the sourrounding area was changed into a park. Until now; outside fresoes and the whole interior are in work of progress. As all works are paid by voluntary and by gifts; the work to complete all will last most probably another 25 years.
