^BSir James Douglass^b (1826-1898), British lighthouse engineer. Douglass worked as Engineer-in-Chief to the Corporation of Trinity House, the organisation responsible for safety at sea in England. He is best known for his design of the lighthouse on the Eddystone Rocks at Plymouth, England. Three previous lighthouses had been destroyed by the sea at Eddystone. Douglass designed a stone building with a cylindrical base, which absorbed some of the energy of the impacting waves and helped prevent the waves from breaking over the beacon in severe weather. Douglass' design, which still stands, paved the way for the construction of similar lighthouses around the world.
