painting by Sieiniradzki shows the warriors of Sviatoslav sacrificing themselves at a ritual massacre under the walls of Dorostol. Sviatoslav, Prince of Kiev, ruled 964-972 AD. In 964 he marched against the Bulgarians of the Danube, conquered Perejaslavetz and Durostorus (the modern Silistria). Later he conquered Bulgaria.
