The uterus is a hollow organ located between the bladder and the rectum in which the fetus develops during gestation. It is connected to the fallopian tubes and the vagina. The uterus is made up of a dense wall of smooth tissue, the myometrium, covered with a mucous membrane, the endometrium. Highly expandable, the uterus stretches during pregnancy to reach 30 times its initial size.
