Archaeologists have found and decoded the messages engraved on the many pillars of polished sandstone that were erected during Ashokaˇs reign.These writings encourage peace, generosity and respect for others.The most famous pillar is that of Sarnath, in northeastern India. Its upper part (now preserved in a museum) was decorated with lions, the symbol of royalty, and wheels, which symbolize Buddhism.
