The local supercluster is a gigantic structure, extending over more than 100 million light-years that contains many clusters and thousands of galaxies. This immense grouping is far from unique; some 50 similar groupings have been found, containing an average of 12 rich clusters. Some astronomers are now searching for even larger structures.
