It is fairly rare for a comet to hit a planet; this happened in July 1994 when the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet broke into some 20 fragments and hit Jupiter. The cascade of collisions left Jupiterˇs atmosphere with dark spots larger than Earth. This lasted for months.
