Five geostationary meteorological satellites are distributed around the planet: the American GOES-West and GOES-East, the European Meteosat, the Russian GOMS, and the Japanese GMS. Their observation zones, which partially overlap, cover all of Earthˇs surface except the polar regions. They are part of World Weather Watch, an international cooperative program set up by the World Meteorological Organization in 1961.
