Jet streams do not always follow a straight path. When the polar jet stream is not moving fast enough, the Coriolis force causes it to undulate slightly. This perturbation may be accentuated until large meanders, called Rossby waves, are formed. The depressions and anticyclones that develop within these loops have a major influence on the climate in the middle latitudes all around the planet.
