Plants are the most threatened in the regions of the intertropical zone. Although biodiversity in these zones is high, the number of individuals of a given species is often relatively low. Certain species of trees in the rainforest have only one representative per hectare, and they are thus more vulnerable. In addition, many tropical plants are endemicthat is, they grow only in a particular region of the planet. The degradation of tropical ecosystems may lead to the complete extinction of the endemic species that they are home to.
