The thickening of the layer of surface algae blocks the Sun's rays. Deprived of light, the lake-bottom algae die, which causes oxygen-consuming bacteria to multiply. Some of the aquatic fauna disappear for lack of oxygen, while the bottom of the basin fills with organic sediments. At the end of the process, the water is totally deprived of oxygen and releases ammonia and hydrogen sulfide.
