The higher the mountain, the deeper its roots extend into Earthˇs mantle. As it erodes, its mass diminishes. Like a ship whose waterline rises when its cargo is removed, the mountain is uplifted. At the same time, accumulations.of sedimentary deposits around the mountain force the crust to sink into the mantle. This compensation effect is called isostasy.
