The Mohs scale compares the hardness of minerals on a scale of 1 to 10, from the softest (1) to the hardest (10). Each mineral is classified according to how it scratches the others or is scratched by them. Diamond, the hardest mineral, cannot be scratched, and thus has the highest rating.
