Cardiac muscle. Digitally enhanced light micrograph of heart tissue stained with haematoxylin and eosin. The heart largely consists of fibres of cardiac muscle (the myocardium) that contract to pump blood around the heart. The muscle cells of the heart are different from other muscle cells (myocytes) in the rest of the body. Cardiac myocytes are branched and joined together by intercalated discs.
