Toronto is the capital of the province of Ontario and is the cultural, financial, commercial and manufacturing centre of Canada. The city holds the headquarters of most of the major Canadian financial and manufacturing companies. It has an important stock exchange, makes a wide variety of goods, is a major port and distribution centre and has a thriving tourist industry. The name "Toronto" comes from an American Indian word for "meeting place".
