Pausanias described a 'hidden tunnel' through which athletes entered the stadium of Olympia. In 1978 such a vaulted entrance tunnel was discovered in the ancient city of Nemea which has been dated to around 340 BC from inscriptions scratched inside. The 'Roman' style vaulted roof of the tunnel is not the first such roof to be found in Greece, the vaulted tombs of Macedon discovered a year earlier had provoked the notion that the vault form was not originally Roman. The 'Roman' arch might therefore properly be called the Greek arch!
