Waldseemuller's Carta Marina. This 1516 world map was produced by German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller (c.1470-1520). It expanded upon his earlier work of 1507. The Americas are mostly unexplored, with the Pacific Ocean not shown. There are numerous illustrations of mythological creatures and travel stories. The text blocks (in Latin) describe different regions, and include a history of the map, and a key to calculating distances. The shield at lower left has a sheet of paper covering a list of corrections. The border shows the compass points and representations of the winds. The red grid lines were added by the map's owner, Johannes Schoner. For detailed views of the map in 12 sections, see images C032/2804 to C032/2815.
