False-colour X-ray of an arthritic hand showing deformation and destruction to the first joints of the fingers. The first joints are those nearest the hand; most of these joints in both hands show signs of erosion. Arthritis is inflammation in one or more joints, characterised by swelling, warmth, redness of the overlying skin & restriction of motion: it may be caused by many other diseases including gout and tuberculosis: Osteoarthritis occurs in old age through mechanical wear. Treatment consists of using anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids (cortisone), reduction of pressure on the joint (by weight loss and with walking aids), and surgery.
