Candida albicans culture growing on Columbia blood agar. Candida albicans is a yeast and normal habitant of the human gut and mouth. It can cause opportunistic oral and genital infections. In immunocompromised patients C. albicans can also cause life-threatening systematic fungal infections. Furthermore this yeast is known to form biofilms on the surface of implantable medical devices.
