FLORENCE view of the Ponte Vecchio on the Arno; and the Vasari Corridor; designed by the architect Giorgio Vasari was commissioned by Cosimo I de 'Medici; in order to allow communication in a secure manner the political and administrative center of the Palazzo Vecchio with the dwelling Private Medici Pitti Palace. The entire elevated corridor; is about one kilometer long way up from the Palazzo Vecchio; the Uffizi Gallery passes; along the Lungarno Archibusieri; then passes over the shops of the east side (left) of the Ponte Vecchio; at its end around the tower of the sheaves; supported by corbels (or 'sports') and continues on the left bank ('Oltrarno') up to the Pitti Palace.
