The Javanese script; natively known as Aksara Jawa (lit. 'the script of Java'); Hanacaraka; or Carakan; is a pre-colonial script used to write Javanese and several other native languages of Indonesia. It is closely related to the Balinese script.
In everyday use; Javanese script has been almost entirely supplanted by Latin script which was introduced by the Dutch during the 19th century.
