ALFRED SANT ABATE Italianate name of Ethelred or Aelred of Rievaulx (Aelredus Rievallensis; 1110-1167) monaco Anglo-Saxon abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Rievaulx from 1147. Still young he was governor of the palace of King David I (future Saint David of Scotland) ; but did not seduced by the lure of short life; who left twenty-five years preferring the Cloister; here having exemplary monastic life was soon elected abbot. Being proficient in the organization of several abbeys in England and Scotland; he was offered several times the bishop; who always refused; preferring the modest monastic life.
