Within the walls of the prison; the jailer Don Pizarro instructs Rocco to dig a grave in the cell Florestan; to make his grave; Leonore as Fidelio; at the scene. The first presentation is November 20; 1805 in the Theater an der Wien (Vienna) was not successful; and the Master was forced to withdraw. Only in 1814; after several revisions which led to even the reduction from three to two acts; the lyrical drama finally met and definitely the favor of the public.
