The scene of tragedy Clearance work is still going on today at the scene of Wendesday's disastrous train crash at St John's ( South east London ) , in which 92 people lost thier lives and over 100 wer seriously injured . Photo shows: Floodlights piercing the darkness help workmen to operate cranes and clear the railway line at St John's near Lewisham , of the tender of a steam train . A crash occured in thick fog , when the steam express train from Cannon Street to the Kent coast hit an electric train from Charing Cross to Hayes , Kent and which had been halved just past the station . Coaches concertinaed and reared up , hitting a viaduct , part of which fell on the wreckage . 5 December 1957
