27 people were killed and 3 injured when the No. 1 prototype of the semisecret de Havilland 110 all-weather jet fighter blew up at the Farnborough, Hampshire air show today (Saturday). The dead included pilot John Derry and his observer. Many of the spectators who were killed or injured were on a hillside struck by a burning engine. The aircraft disintegrated after crashing through the sound barrier at more than 700 miles an hour in an 8 miles dive. After disaster had struck the hillside: a stretcher is lowered to receive a casualty while other helpers give first aid to the injured. In centre a fire engine stands by and in background a horrified crowd watches the grim scene. [Transport, aviation, accident, disaster, tragedy, aeroplane] 6 September 1952
