Lines across the sea. Britain's newest and largest cable laying ship HMTS Monarch, leaves the Thames Estuary, shortly to lay an entirely new type of telecommunications, cable between Britain and Holland. The ship, built in 1945 and 8000 tons gross, is built to carry 2 1/2 thousand nautical miles of standard cable in for cylindrical tanks. The cable is electrically laid on the seabed at speeds up to 500 feet per minute. The new cable has been designed by Post Office engineers and manufactured by a British cable firm. Photo shows, the cable, which will link Britain and Holland's wound symmetrically into one of the four cylindrical tanks aboard HMTS Monarch at Greenwich today (Friday). 14 November1947 .
