A special Westminster Abbey service, followed by the traditional procession of judges to the Palace of Westminster, marked the opening of the Michaelmas Law sittings today. Resplendent in their stately robes and full wigs, the Lords of appeal, judges, official referees, County court judges, King's counsel, and offices of the Supreme Court, brought a splash of colour to the greyness of the London scene as headed by the Lord Chancellor, they followed the Tipstaff, the mace bearer and the purse of state in solemn procession from the ancient abbey. Picture shows: Mr Frederick Harris, the Tipstaff, only official authorised to arrest persons guilty of contempt of court, pictured at the ceremony today. It is his one great day a year-when he heads the judicial procession. 13 October 1947
