The traditional election by the court of Aldermen of the next Lord Mayor of London, to succeed Sir Bracewiell Smith in November, was held at Guildhall. After a service at St Margaret's, Lothbury, the Lord Mayor, accompanied by Aldermen, Sheriffs and High Offices, took his place on the hustings at Guildhall. Then the names of two qualified aldermen, normally the next two in rotation, was submitted to the court of aldermen by delivery for final selection. The senior of these, Sir Frederick Wells, alderman of Bread Street, is by usual custom, proclaimed the Lord Mayor of London for the ensuing year.
