Pilotless plane flies of Atlantic. The Skymaster of the United States Air Force, which landed at Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, yesterday after making the first ever pilotless transatlantic crossing attracted great interest on the airfield today (Tuesday). The flight, from Stephenville, Newfoundland, to Brize Norton, a distance of 2400 miles, was completed in 10 1/4 hours without one of the 14 men aboard touching controls. Flying by a 'mechanical brain', the Skymaster took off automatically, received automatic 'fixes' from two radios ships in the Atlantic, and touched down at its destination after portable 'man had indicated the runway allocated to it. Photo shows, W/Com Jeff, RAF, Mr James L Anast, Mr C S Franklin, Maj T E Weldon, Mr G Johnson, Capt P J Wells, Col J N Gillespie, All weather Flying Division, USAF, Capt R J Whiting, T/Sgt Welkes McKee, Sgt R Centolella and Sgt J C Nimon. 23 September 1947
