Berkshire CID were called in today to investigate a fire which started in the early hours of this morning at Sunninghill Park, the intended residence of H.R.H Princess Elizabeth and Lieut Phillip Mountbatten, R.N only one wing of the 25 room building escaped the flames after hours of fighting by brigades from six Berkshire and Surrey towns. The police are edeavouring the establish the cause of the fire; whether accidental, deliberately fired as a protest against restoration work going on, or set on fire from political motives. 30 August 1947
