The first High Commissioner for the new state of Pakistan, Mr Ibrahim Rahimtoola, unfurled the flag of independence at the temporary Pakistan office at Lancaster House, London. The new flag of India had previously been unfurled above India House at Aldwych. Owing the shortage of accommodation, Mr Rahimtoola has been unable to find suitable London offices for his staff. To enable today's ceremony to be carried out the British government lent him Lancaster House for one day only.
