Harry Stevelman, the London barrowboy was fined ?0 and ?0 in costs for a number of offences concerning the sale of food as a street trader, and who was yesterday sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for failing to pay the fine, left Wormwood Scrubs prison, a free man, some six hours later. This fine had been paid by Mr Norman Hurst, an Oxford Street jeweller. They had never met before. Mr Hurst was anxious about the effect of imprisonment of the 19-year-old boy and decided to pay the fine immediately so that Stevelman would not have to spend a night in prison. After gaining the boy's release, Mr Hurst took him to his Stanmore home where he spent the night. 14 August 1947
