St Nazaire hero's return to scene of their raid. Early this morning the cruiser Sirius steamed up the Loire to St Nazaire, France, returning survivors to the scene of their epic raid to honour their lost comrades. They were given a moving welcome by the people of all ashore the town as they marched ashore with the bronze plaque, bearing the words 'They achieved much, having dared all', for the French prepared monolith. After the unveiling ceremony performed by M Radadier, French Premier, and attended by Mr Duff Cooper, British Ambassador, and Navy and Army chiefs, an unnamed soldier and sailor placed the plaque at the foot of the memorial. Photo shows, M Ramadier, French Premier, Kisses Colonel Newman on each cheek in the traditional french manner after investing him at a ceremony held on the quay side at St Nazaire this morning. Colonel Newman VC, (Military Force) led the Commandos in the epic attack on that March day in 1942. he is one of the three surviving VC's of the raid. 2 August 1947
