The Padstow Hobby Horse, relic of the days when Britain was menaced by the Spanish Armada, was out on the streets during May Day celebrations in the Cornish town yesterday. Legend has it that a great number of these horses were made to line the clifftops when the Armada was thought to be approaching to give the impression that massed cavalry were awaiting the invasion. Yearly the tradition is re-enacted, and the hobbyhorse in the picture is more than 200 years old. It is preceded by a man known as the teaser, who is supposed to scare the horses into submission. 2 May 1947
