The submarine "Acheron" was launched at Chatham today by Mrs Middleton, wife of rear Adml GB Middleton, CBE, Adml superintendent of Chatham dockyard. The "Acheron" is the 7th ship of her name, and the 17th "a" class submarine to be launched. The vessel takes its name from the River over which, according to Greek mythology, Charon the Boatman used to ferry the souls of the dead to the infernal regions. 25 March 1947
