Five hurt in head-on train crash. Five railwaymen were injured when a Great Western Railways goods train loaded with food from Avonmouth collided head-on with another good strain on a single line track between Avonmouth and Severn Beach, Gloucestershire, early today, Tuesday, when ten trucks were derailed, among them several petrol wagons. Other trucks were telescoped compiled over the locomotive, which were locked together. Leaking petrol dripped onto the food lying on the embankment, and railway workers were warned not to smoke. The frozen road surfaces made it too dangerous to drive ambulances to the sea and stretcher parties tramped along the ice coated track to reach the injured, who were placed on stretchers by the light of oil flares and the glow of open furnaces. Photo shows, the wreckage of the two goods trains collided between Avonmouth and Severn Beach today, Tuesday. 18 February 1947
